Book Bag
The goal of the Book Bag program is to encourage elementary school children to read at home. This is achieved by providing bags filled with books to elementary school children who then take them home and read with their families. The NEBC purchases canvas tote bags and donates funds to enable teachers to fill them with books and other educational materials. These materials either have one specific theme or concentrate on a particular author. Children are allowed to take the bags home for one-week periods.
The bags are decorated by Susan Spellman of Spellman Illustration with the logos of the sponsoring companies, and are circulated throughout the elementary schools. This year, teachers were surveyed as to their needs for new and replacement bags, and many new teachers received bags for the first time. The result was that addition of 38 bags to the supply currently in use.
This program is one of the longest running NEBC programs and remains very popular with both teachers and elementary school children.
