Port Day
Port Day is designed to develop awareness in third and fourth grade students of the many possibilities in the world of work. When our presenters talk about how they developed an interest in their careers and what skills they may have learned in elementary school that they now use in their jobs, a concrete business-education connection is made.
Career development programs are appropriate for all education levels. At the elementary school level, children are gaining an awareness of themselves and can benefit by meeting workers in their community and relating what they learn at school to the world outside. According to the American School Counseling Association’s National Standards for Career Development, programs such as Port Day can provide an environment where students begin to understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, training, and the world of work. There are many career development competencies that students must acquire as they move through each grade level. Schools cannot do this job alone. It is essential to involve the community and use the resources available. Port Day is just one example of a valuable career program that connects business with education.
